CONDITION: First and only issue of the almost impossible to find Hersey pulp. Readers crease in cover, along with some warping, creases, and rubbing to outside edge. Light tan paper, supple. Cobbled together from stories originally purchased by Bernarr MacFadden, when Harold Hersey got his seed money from MacFadden, he also picked up several titles and a passel of stories. An interesting sidebar to this title, is that Robert E. Howard apparently submitted a story for the second issue, but was rejected by Hersey only because he canceled the magazine after only one issue.

Includes: UNDER THE MOONS OF MARS [Pt 1] by Edgar Rice Burroughs under the pen name of Norman Bean. His first published story. Exceedingly rare, regardless of condition. Most pulp titles prior to World War I are scarce, due to paper drives and obviously the ravages of age. ALL-STORY is no exception and copies of Burrough's first serial are exceedingly scarce. A coverless copy of this pulp sold at auction more than a decade ago at Pulpcon for well over $300.

It's been said that Burroughs sent this serial in to the Munsey office with a notation that the story was written by someone with a "Normal Bean" as in a normal head, and they published it under the name Norman Bean.

Worts. Almost impossible to find one, let alone four issues here in this auction. Carwood was one of those publishing houses that lived life on a financial razors edge. Buying original stories for next to nothing and supplementing the rest of a magazine with reprints from other publishers. Their printer used the cheapest paper stock, and to find a copy, let alone a copy that hasn't crumbled to dust is a rare treat indeed.
